Android 16 Beta: Dynamic notifications and improved multitasking!

Google has rolled out the first public beta of Android 16 , bringing major features like dynamic notifications on the lock screen and changes to improve app compatibility on tablets and foldable devices.

The new features come as Android seeks to compete with similar features recently unveiled by Apple and Samsung.

Dynamic notifications for real-time tracking

One of the biggest new features in Android 16 is the Live Updates feature, which offers dynamic notifications that are updated in real time . These allow users to track important activities, such as carpool rides or food deliveries, right from the lock screen.

This feature is strongly reminiscent of the Live Activities that Apple introduced on its iPhones in 2022, as well as the Now Bar unveiled this week by Samsung in its One UI 7 interface with the Galaxy S25.

However, unlike Apple and Samsung’s implementations, Android 16 is currently limited to tracking apps like ride-hailing, delivery, or navigation services . Additionally, these notifications appear at the top of the regular notification stack, rather than in specific locations like the bottom of the screen or around the notch.

Resizable applications required

Android 16 also introduces a rule requiring developers to make their apps resizable and adaptable to all screen sizes . This move is intended to ensure that apps run smoothly on devices with large screens, such as tablets or foldable phones, while also supporting multitasking.

Games are exempt from this requirement, and developers can still choose not to enforce this rule in this beta. However, this option will disappear with the arrival of Android 17 in 2026.

Other new features in the public beta

Here are some other notable improvements introduced in this first public beta:

  • Support for Advanced Professional Video (APV) video codec for better video quality.
  • Night mode scene detection in photo apps.
  • Improved vertical text rendering, especially useful for Asian languages.
  • Integration of a Health Connect application for sharing medical information.
  • Improvements to the photo selection menu and richer haptic controls.

Gemini Extensions and AI Features

Google has confirmed that it is working on additional extensions for its Gemini assistant , after launching the ability to perform multi-app actions with a single command. As of now, Gemini works primarily with Google apps, some Samsung apps, and a few third-party options , like Spotify and WhatsApp. But Google promises increased compatibility with more apps and device manufacturers.

Availability and schedule

The Android 16 public beta is available today for the Google Pixel 6 and newer models , as well as the Pixel Tablet . For users who don’t want to test a beta, Android 16 is expected to roll out in its final form in Q2 2025 , much earlier than the usual Q3 update window.

With this update, Google is clearly looking to strengthen compatibility with large screens and integrate advanced AI features, while competing with similar offerings from Apple and Samsung.
