Information leaked by Kepler_L2 on the NeoGAF forums suggests that the PlayStation 6 (PS6) development is further along than previously thought . The System on Chip (SoC) design is complete and currently in pre-silicon validation. The key milestone of A0 tapeout, where the first physical prototypes of these chips will be produced for real-world testing, is scheduled for late 2025.
According to leaks, the PS6 will feature a semi-custom APU designed by AMD and manufactured by TSMC . This processor will combine a Zen 5 CPU and a UDNA (formerly RDNA 5) GPU, both of which are based on cutting-edge process nodes .
Technical characteristics:
- Zen 5 CPU: Composed of 8 cores and 16 threads, it will offer significant performance gains compared to the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU.
- UDNA GPU: Based on TSMC’s N3E process, this GPU is expected to feature advanced technologies such as X3D cache, similar to that of AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors. This promises improved performance in gaming and compute-intensive tasks.
Intel reportedly lost the tender to produce this processor to AMD as early as 2022.
Gaming capabilities: a new dimension
The PS6 aims to revolutionize the gaming experience by offering 4K resolutions at 120 frames per second (FPS) and 8K at 60 FPS , thanks to its Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU. While exact performance remains unclear, Sony is expected to rely on AI-powered upscaling technologies to deliver high-quality graphics.
Advanced technologies expected:
- PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR): An enhanced version of this technology promises even more detailed graphics.
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 5 (FSR 5): This technology will maximize visual quality while maintaining high performance.
As a reminder, the PS5 had already made a leap forward compared to the PS4, going from 1.84 teraflops to 10.3 teraflops. The PS6 should continue this momentum with an even more impressive increase.
Release date: 2027?
The PlayStation 5, which launched in November 2020, redefined the standards for home consoles. The PS6 is rumored to be coming in 2027 , giving gamers a new generation of hardware after a seven-year wait.
With cutting-edge technologies and innovative features, the PS6 could well be a new turning point in the world of gaming consoles.
